BIOGRAPHY

Bill Gorgas began his apprenticeship to stone in 1972 in Yosemite working on a backcountry trail crew. During his nine seasons on trails the movement of stone, its rough shaping, finished shaping and placement into such constructs as riprap, causeway and retaining walls were parts of his building knowledge of stone. Moreover, the ability to create riparian waterfeatures was sublimated during prolonged stays in the Sierra backcountry. The beauty and wildness in nature contains a considerable chaos. Nine seasons saturation in such beauty is one thing. Distilling a less chaotic vision, hanging it in a bay area backyard and making it work is another. In the late eighties, Bill met Paul Cowley of Potomac WaterWorks on a project in Oakland. The client hired Paul to handle the mechanics and Bill as the stonemason to dress the pond in stone. The end product graced the pages of Fine Gardening magazine (March/April, 1994) and the rest, as they say, is history. Bill lives in San Francisco with his wife Linda. He is a licensed builder and continues to practice the selective engagement which allows him to create accents for the garden in water and stone.
